A traumatic injury is one where only a particular area of the brain is affected, that area where the external blow was applied. Often, it may result in damage only to the area controlling the speech, sight or any such particular function of the body. Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury are:
* Unconsciousness is the most common sympton.
* An uneven size in the pupil sizes also indicates the same.
* Sometimes, if a person’s vision is blurred, or is being sensitive to light, it may suggest a brain injury.
* If a person is unable to balance himself, then it may mean an injury.
* Feeling dizzy or nauseous is another symptom.
* Breathing problems also give the same indication.
* An increase in blood pressure, very slow pulse rate and slow rate of breathing is also a symptom.
* If a person has difficulty in moving any particular part of the body, it is also a brain injury symptom.
* Vomiting may also mean the same.
* Another important symptom is when a person is not alert and is taking time to respond to others.
* If a person is feeling very lazy, sleepy and gets tired very easily, this is another symptom.
* Headaches, frequent confusion, or inability to remember things suggests the same thing.
* If there is any difficulty in hearing, or a ringing sensation in the ears, it may mean an injury.
* If there are any oddities in the behavior, like increased irritability, or extremities of laughter or crying for no reason, this can also be a symptom.
* Numbness or swelling in the body parts can be for the same reason.
* If there are problems in controlling the bladder or bowel movements, it may also mean a brain injury.
An acquired brain injury is one that occurs on a cellular level, i.e., all the cells in the brain are affected by it. Though it is different from a traumatic injury, its symptoms are more or less similar to a traumatic injury. But there are some symptoms that are much more prominent in a patient of an acquired brain injury. These are:
* Such patients will have much trouble to think aptly or with their memory.
* They may even spend a very long time in coma or in a vegetative state.
* They will have more odd behavioral issues like increased anger, depression, hostility or irritability.
* They may even have trouble in muscular movements.
If a person is seen to have the above symptoms after a blow on the head or any of the major symptoms of a traumatic brain injury, the most wise decision would be to consult a physician as soon as possible.
