Traumatic brain injury is an injury to the brain caused by a sudden violent blow to the head. A violent blow to the head causes the brain to collide with the skull causing bruising, tears and bleeding. A hard impact can even cause the skull to fracture thereby injuring the brain in another manner. The violent blow to the brain may be caused by a motor vehicle accident, a bullet of blunt force trauma from any heavy object, or a construction or job-related accident. A simple fall may also be the method of injury, which is common in the over 65 age group. In infants, violent shaking can cause traumatic brain injury.
The severity of the injury sometimes depends upon what part of the brain was affected. A mild traumatic brain injury (concussion) causes temporary confusion and headache; a severe traumatic brain injury may cause death.
Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms
Brief period of unconsciousness Amnesia for events immediately before and after event Headache Confusion Dizziness/loss of balance Blurred vision/ringing in ears Mood changes Memory/Concentration problems
A traumatic brain injury can have wide-ranging physical and psychological effects. Pressure building in the brain when the brain suffers an injury can cause additional damage
Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms
Persistent headache Repeated nausea and vomiting Seizures/convulsions Inability to awaken from sleep Dilation of pupils Slurred speech Weakness or numbness of extremities Loss of coordination Profound confusion Agitation
The treatment for mild traumatic brain injury usually requires bed rest and over the counter pain relief for headache, while the treatment for moderate to severe traumatic brain injury depends on the severity of the injury. Treatment most certainly would include hospitalization, most probably in intensive care, surgery and long term rehabilitation care and treatment.
